Marlins Drop Pair of Matches to Split at Tournament

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team faced a pair of tough opponents on the final day of the Buttermaker Tournament, falling to Stevenson and Muhlenberg, to split the weekend set.

3-1 Loss to Stevenson (26-24, 20-25, 25-18, 25-16)

Stevenson outlasted the Marlins in the first set before VWU rallied back with a 25-20 second-set win to even the match. The Mustangs outhit Virginia Wesleyan in the final two sets, connecting for 31 kills while committing just 10 errors for the win.

Moriah Savage led Stevenson (8-0) with 16 kills while Caroline Dangel registered 27 assists and 21 digs.

Kristina Scott led the Marlins with 14 kills on a .524 hitting percentage. Emilee Pierson posted 25 assists and 12 digs to go with a team-leading 16 digs from Allison Mackley.

3-1 Loss to Muhlenberg (25-21, 25-13, 22-25, 25-17)

Virginia Wesleyan claimed the third set to extend the match, but Muhlenberg managed to put the Marlins away in four sets to conclude play in the Buttermaker Tournament.

After claiming the first two sets, Muhlenberg found itself tied at 19 with the Marlins in the third set. Virginia Wesleyan collected the next four points on kills from Ashley Bologna and Amber Matalus and a Mackley ace to go up 23-19.

Muhlenberg battled back to make it 23-22, but a kill by Elizabeth Britton helped the Marlins side out, where Matalus could serve for a set victory.

The two squads went back and forth early in the fourth set, with the Marlins leading at 5-4, but that would be the final lead for VWU as Muhlenberg finished off the match.

Kelly Tornetta led Muhlenberg (7-2) with 18 kills and just one error to go with 18 digs. Shannon Hubert dished out 41 assists while collecting 18 digs.

Scott led the Marlins with 10 kills while Pierson had 16 assists and Meghan Wood added 15.

Pierson was named to the Buttermaker Tournament All-Tournament Team for her performances this weekend.

Virginia Wesleyan (5-4/0-0) travels to Bridgewater College (8-0/0-0) Tuesday for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams. Opening whistle is scheduled for 7 p.m.
