Saturday Sweep for Marlins Volleyball
ROANOKE, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball team won a pair of three-set matches on Saturday, including a battle with Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent, Hollins University.
3-0 Victory over Hollins (25-9, 25-11, 25-11)
The Marlins rolled in the first match of the day against Hollins (2-22/0-10) after hitting .446 for the match.
Tiffany Barrett led the Marlins with 11 kills while Doneisha Hall contributed nine while hitting .750 for the match. Hall's hitting percentage is the sixth-best by a Marlin in a single match in program history.
3-0 Victory over Greensboro (25-21, 26-24, 25-23)
The first set went back and forth between Virginia Wesleyan and Greensboro with an attack error cutting the Marlin lead to one, 22-21. A kill by Amber Matalus off a Meghan Wood assist, paired with two attack errors, closed the first set for the Marlins.
VWC led most of the second set, holding a 20-14 edge before Greensboro chipped away to tie the contest at 23-all. Meredith Summers had three kills while Emily Horn tallied a kill and a service ace during the 9-3 run.
Each team collected a kill to tie the match at 24 before Hall stepped up to win the set for the Marlins. The sophomore posted a kill off a Pierson pass, the teamed with Kristina Scott to block away an attack attempt for set point.
Greensboro led 9-6 in the third set, but six-straight points on Pierson's serve gave the Marlins a 12-9 lead. Hall had two kills in the run while Scott and Matalus posted one each. The Marlins would not relinquish the lead.
Barrett led the Marlins with 15 kills while Hall posted 13 kills on a .706 hitting clip, her second-straight match over .700. Mackley posted a career-best 28 digs in the victory.
Virginia Wesleyan (15-13/5-4) hosts Lynchburg College (16-9/6-3) at 6:30 p.m. Friday for an ODAC match.
