Fredericksburg, VA- The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team kicked off their fall tournament play this past weekend at the ITA South Atlantic Regional held at the University of Mary Washington. The Marlins entered four players in the event, four singles and two doubles teams.
Senior Katie Staman (Lancaster, PA) and sophomore Audrey Bally (Nice, France) each reached the semifinal of their respective draw. Staman defeated Nina Bertz of Stevenson 8-2 then Natalie Tellerton from Southern Virginia 8-5 before falling to Erin Volutza of Wilkes University 8-5 in the semifinal. Bally took down Grace Connell from Catholic University 8-2 before edging Haverford's Natalie Williams 8-5. Bally fell to SVU's Lauren Morrison 8-2 in the semifinal.
Freshman Christine Zalamada (Poquosen, VA) opened up her college tennis career by upending Lisa Genadry of Catholic University 8-2. She continued solid play in her first event by defeating Lydia Fox of Dickinson 8-3 in the quarterfinals before falling Jordan Schaefer of Salisbury University 8-2
In doubles, Katie Staman and Audrey Bally ran the table in the C draw by taking 3 consecutive matches before receiving a default in the finals to claim the championship. In route to their title the defeated teams from Catholic, Stevenson and Bridgewater.
Overall, the Marlins finished the weekend with a 10-7 record. Next weekend the Marlins travel to Randolph Macon to take part in their fall invite. The flighted event will include: Bridgewater, Juniaita, Washington College, Roanoke College, and Randolph Macon.
