Marlins Fall in 5-4 Heartbreaker

Salem, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team had a long afternoon of tennis in Salem as they came up just short against the Roanoke College Maroons.

The Marlins got off on the right foot by taking two of the three doubles matches. One win came from the Freshman duo of Makayla Velic (Jacksonville, FL) and Audrey Bally (Nice, France)  at #1 doubles by a score of 8-3. Katie Staman (Lancaster, PA) and Courtney Simmons (Reeveville,SC) at #2 doubles gave the Marlins their second point with an 8-3 win.

In singles action, Audrey Bally at # 2 and Kristina Sablestrom at #6 picked up wins with scores of 6-4, 6-2 and 7-6, 6-1 respectively. At #1 singles, Makayla Velic fought to the bitter end in a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 loss. Senior Kellen Phillips (Alexanderia, VA) also had a tough three set match as she fell 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 at #5 singles.

With the loss, the Lady Marlins fall to 8-8. VWU will travel to Bristol, VA to take on Emory Henry on Sunday at 9 AM at the Bristol Racquet and Fitness Club.
