Doubles win prevents Washington College sweep

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A tough Washington College women's tennis team swept singles in straight sets Monday and posted an 8-1 non-conference victory over the host Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College at the Everett Tennis Center.

Rookie Marissa Cifuentes (Virginia Beach/Bayside) and sophomore Sydney Charity (Hampton/Hampton) teamed at No. 3 doubles to prevent a total sweep by the Shorewomen (2-0).  The Marlin duo pinned an 8-2 loss on Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Hartford) and Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South).

Cifuentes played well at No. 3 singles in the first first against Blair King (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill, Conn.), falling just 7-6.  But, King stormed back in the second set for a 6-0 decision.

"Washington College is a very talented team and their top two players are outstanding," said VWC Tennis Director Darryl Cummings. "I admire the way our team competed. They really represent the College well. They continue to give a very good effort along with increasing their commitment to their respective games."

VWC, now 1-6, plays again on Saturday, March 15, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition at Roanoke College beginning at 10 a.m.
