Bridgewater Upsets Marlins 2-1 in ODAC Semis
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Bridgewater College, the No. 4 seed in the ODAC women's soccer tournament, upset No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan University 2-1 on Saturday afternoon to advance to the championship match.
Bridgewater started the scoring early as Annie Sible sent a free kick into the box that was volleyed over the head of the Marlin keeper by Keri Rager for the first goal at the game at 5:52.
The Eagles kept the pressure up in the first half, making several runs despite being held to four shots.
Bridgewater broke through again in the 67th minute as Bailey Kratz finished off a long run in the upper 90 on what would be the lone shot of the second half for the Eagles.
The 2-0 lead held until the final minute when Alex Davidson converted on a penalty kick with just six seconds remaining to spoil the shutout bid.
Hayley Talbott made 12 saves in the victory for the Eagles.
Virginia Wesleyan held a 30-5 edge in shots and a 12-4 margin in corner kicks.
No. 4 Bridgewater (16-4-1) advances to play the winner of No. 2 Lynchburg (16-3) and No. 3 Roanoke (11-6-2) in the ODAC championship match on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Virginia Wesleyan ends the regular season with a 14-6-1 overall record with a 9-1 mark in ODAC play. The Marlins will await a potential at-large berth to the NCAA tournament. The selection show will be on Monday.
