Marlins Score 2-1 Victory at N.C. Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team used two first-half goals to defeat N.C. Wesleyan 2-1 in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.

Anna Pedicone started the scoring in the fifth minute when she ripped a shot from 25 yards out that deflected off the keeper and into the goal. The freshman has now tallied at least one goal in each of VWU's last five matches. That spurt puts her in the team lead with six goals and 12 points.

The Marlins scored the decisive goal at 35:39 when Allie Angell sent a through ball to Ryan Applewhite for the breakaway.

N.C. Wesleyan cut the lead to a goal just one minute into the second half when Ella Burkhart sent a free kick into the box where it was headed home by Cydney Nichols.

The Battling Bishops put another shot on goal in the 76th minute looking to even the score, but Alicia Zamora corralled the save to preserve the win.

Alicia Jacobs made six saves for N.C. Wesleyan (0-5-1) in the second half as the Battling Bishops registered nine saves as a team. Zamora finished with two saves for the Marlins.

VWU held a 17-6 edge in shots and 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
