Marlins Fall 2-1 in ODAC Championship
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The No. 2-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team rallied in the second half, but fell to No. 1 Washington and Lee University 2-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship match Sunday afternoon.
The championship appearance was the first for the Marlins since the 2011 season, a 1-0 loss to Lynchburg College. The Generals last appeared in the title match in 2014, also a 1-0 loss to Lynchburg. W&L's last ODAC title was in 2009, a 0-0 penalty kick victory over the Marlins.
Washington and Lee was the first to break through on the scoreboard Sunday as Tricia Jessee beat her defender and took a shot from the middle to score high at 20:55.
The Generals tallied a second score at 28:48 when Katie Clemmons crossed the ball towards the center where Megan Engeland got a good attempt away for an insurance tally.
The Marlin defense locked down the Generals for the remainder of the match, but could manage just one score late.
Annie Hartman collected the ball in the center of the box at the 69:09 mark, finishing it off in the back of the net.
Hartman put another attempt on goal nine minutes later, but Maggie Nolan made the stop for the Generals to preserve the lead.
Virginia Wesleyan held an 8-7 edge in shots while the Generals led 3-2 in corner kicks.
Nolan made three saves for Washington and Lee (13-3-1) while Taylor Chapman stopped one for the Marlins.
