Women's Lacrosse Falls to Meredith in Season Opener

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener, 20-6, against Meredith College Sunday afternoon at Birdsong Field. With the result, the Marlins go to 0-1 on the season while Meredith improves to 2-0.

Things were pretty even over the course of the first five minutes with both teams firing off a few shots. The Avenging Angels offense then began to click and the opposition scored the contest's first 13 goals. Abby Shope was able to stop the run, cashing in one near the end of the period but the Marlins would head to the locker room down 14-1.

Virginia Wesleyan had a little more success the second half as they held Meredith to just six goals while scoring five of their own. Shope registered her second goal of the day at the 20:54 mark and the Marlins recorded the game's last four goals courtesy of Tori Manahan, Jordan Callahan, Liza Holford and Renee Burt.

Goalie duties were split with Jordan Moilanen getting 20:50 of action and Mike Hairston serving the other 39:10. Hairston would finish with four saves and Moilanen one.

Women's lacrosse will return to action at 4 p.m. on Thursday as the team hosts Marymount University at Birdsong Field.
