Women's Lacrosse Battles Tough In ODAC Defeat

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell, 11-7, in a tight battle with Bridgewater Saturday afternoon on Birdsong Field. With the loss, the Marlins move to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in conference action. The Eagles improve to 9-2 on the year (3-1 ODAC).

Liza Holford got the Marlins going right out of the gate as she converted on a free-position attempt just under two minutes in. Bridgewater answered back with two of their own, but their lead was brief as in over a five minute period, VWU piled in three goals including another free position this time from Tori Manahan. The Eagles would close out the half with one more score but they would trail the home team 4-3 going into the half.

Bridgewater came out hot in the second stanza, scoring the period's first six goals. Becca Winslow broke it up with a free position goal, but the Eagles then tucked away two more. The Marlins scored two more in the final minute but time expired, squashing any attempt at the comeback.

Six Marlins came away with a goal, led by Manahan's two.

Jordan Molianen played the majority of the game between the pipes for the Marlins, picking up 12 total saves. Mike Hairston would finish out the final 4:12.

Women's lacrosse will return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the squad travels to Ashland for a conference tilt with Randolph-Macon.
