Captains Ride First Half Spurt to Down Marlins
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- A 13-goal run in the first half by Christopher Newport University helped propel the Captains past the Virginia Wesleyan women's lacrosse team, 18-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
CNU scored first and early into the match with a goal off a free position shot by Sara Culver. The Captains' Tessy D'Archy made the score 2-0 on an unassisted goal just 1:01 into the game. The Captains continued to attack the net adding another 11 goals to make the score 13-0 at the half. Culver had three goals before intermission as 10 different Captains scored in the first 30 minutes.
Megan Schallock got the Marlins on the board at the start of the second half, scoring an unassisted goal at the 27:19 mark. Virginia Wesleyan was able to hold off the Captains for seven minutes to start the second half before Madison Chestnut scored to put CNU up 14-1. Schallock answered quickly when she put her second goal of the night in the back of the net a minute later.
The match ended on a 4-0 run by the Captains with Meaghan Galvin posting two assists in the spurt.
Culver led all scorers with three goals on the night while teammate Carly Wilson had two goals and an assist for Christopher Newport (2-2).
CNU led 18-4 in draw controls with the Marlins leading 13-10 in ground balls.
Virginia Wesleyan (0-2) travels to Methodist University (3-2) Saturday for a noon start in non-conference action.
