Strong second half not enough to carry VWC to victory

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's women's lacrosse team outscored Roanoke College's Maroons 4-2 in the second half of Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.

But, Roanoke held the upperhand in the first half, outscoring the Marlins 12-4, which was enough to help the Maroons to a 14-8 victory.

Claire Feeney (Old Greenwich, Conn./Old Greenwich) scored the first two goals of the game to give Roanoke (3-3, 1-0 ODAC) a 2-0 lead.  Virginia Wesleyan's Brooke Cabeceiras (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester)scored 53 seconds after Feeney's second goal to pull the Marlins (2-4, 1-1 ODAC) within a 2-1 score, but that's as close as it would get.

The Maroons scored in runs of two, three, and five goals to open up a 12-4 lead by halftime.  Feeney scored six times in the first half for Roanoke.

Virginia Wesleyan scored the last goal of the half on a shot by Natalie Furey (Easton, Md./Easton) and reeled off two goals in the first six minutes of the second half as Stacey Sank (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois Central)and Furey put the ball into the net.

The Marlin defense stepped up its game to keep the Maroons in check for most of the half, while the offense attempted to cut into the spread. But, after the two quick goals at the beginning of the half, VWC did not find another score until 6:31 remaining to be played. Cabeceiras scored that one to pull the Marlins within a 12-7 score.

After being shutout most of the half, Roanoke found an opening in the VWC defense and scored on a shot by Julia Galanto (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) with 4:32 on the clock.

The teams traded goals in the final 1:30 as Carla Williams (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney)scored for the Marlins and Feeney added another goal for Roanoke.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Tuesday, March 18, hosting the Panthers of Alabama's Birmingham-Southern College at 4 p.m.  It's part of a non-conference doubleheader that includes VWC's men hosting Pennsylvania's Washington & Jefferson College at 7 p.m.
