Marlins score only one goal in loss to Christopher Newport

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Competition in Virginia Wesleyan College's 13-7 non-conference loss to Christopher Newport University on Wednesday was like night and day.

The host Marlins (2-3) bolted out to a 5-0 lead, behind a pair of goals by junior Carla Williams (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) and held on for a 6-4 lead at halftime.

When competition resumed in the second half, momentum changed dramatically, as Christopher Newport (3-2) outscored the Marlins 9-1 to roll away with the victory. Meghan Galvin (Arlington/Yorktown) led CNU's second half attack with three goals and Jessica Singer (Herndon/Herndon) and Erin Callahan (Vienna/James Madison) added two each.

Free-position shots helped the Captains to stay in the game and eventually take the lead as CNU hit on 5-of-10 attempts, including 3-of-4 in the first half.  VWC had its chances in the free shots, but connected on just 2-of-9.

CNU also owned the advantage in shots, 32-20, but Virginia Wesleyan posted a 39-32 lead in ground balls.  Rookie Natalie Furey (Easton, Md./Easton)led the Marlins with seven.  Furey and Williams led VWC scoring with a pair of goals each.

Galvin led CNU with four goals, followed by Singer and Callahan with three each.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, March 15, hosting Roanoke College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at 1 p.m.
