Harris Named D3hoops.com Regional Player of the Year

VIRGNIA BEACH, Va. – Jayla Harris of the Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team has been named the All-South Region Player of the Year as selected by D3hoops.com. Harris was named a member of the All-Region First Team as well.

Harris laid it all on the court in her senior year, setting career-highs in nearly every statistical category. Over the course of the season, the guard averaged 21.1 points which not only topped every player in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) but also ranked ninth in all of Division III. Out of her 26 games played, Harris hit the 20-point mark in 16 games and the 30-point mark in three games. The Fredericksburg, Va. native also made her way into the VWU record books as she eclipsed the career points mark of 1,910 set by Amy Simpson 33 years ago. Harris finishes out her career with 1,931 points.

Her actions have not gone unnoticed this year either as Harris has received numerous awards. The senior was tabbed a First Team All-ODAC member for the third time in her career as well as being named the conference's Player of the Year (just the second Marlin to ever earn the accolade).

Harris will return to the court one final time as she will play in the Beyond Sports Division III Women's Collegiate All-Star Game presented by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The game will be held at 5 p.m. on March 16 at the Cregger Center in Salem, Va.
