Women's Basketball Drops Tight Battle With Guilford

GUILFORD, N.C. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell, 55-51, to Guilford Saturday afternoon on the road. With the loss, the Marlins move to 10-8 on the season and 7-4 in conference play. Guilford slides up to 12-5 on the year (9-2 ODAC).

After going down five to start the contest, four-straight Marlin field goals gave VWU the lead. The team would use that momentum to cultivate a 16-13 lead after one quarter of action. In the second, things were even as the team exchanged buckets for the first seven minutes. The Quakers would go on a 8-0 run to close out the stanza though, giving them a 31-25 lead at the intermission. In the second half, the Marlins made several attempts to jump back in the lead but Guilford held on through the full 20 minutes, securing the win.

Coming off her first career double-double last game, Amanda Gerni replicated it with a 11 point, 10 rebound performance. Also aiding in the offense was Mak McSweeney who finished the day with 11 points and five boards.

Women's basketball returns to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the team heads to Shenandoah for another ODAC showdown.
