Women's Basketball Unable to Figure Out Quakers

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to Guilford, 62-49,  in the Jane P. Batten Student Center Saturday afternoon. The Marlins move to 3-5 on the season and 0-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. Guilford improves to 5-1 (2-0 ODAC).

After Guilford controlled much of the opening stanza, VWU began to get its wheels turning. Midway through the second, Ceci Billings hit a lay up and that was followed up by a Amanda Gerni jumper that gave the Marlins their first lead of the game, 19-17. The Quakers rallied though, regaining the lead and taking a 25-23 hold into the half.

Early in the third quarter, Virginia Wesleyan tied it up at 29 a piece but that would be as close as the Marlins could come as Guilford pulled away down the final stretch.

Amanda Gerni had a solid night from the field scoring a team-high 16 points and going an impressive 4-for7 from beyond the arc. The junior was also just one rebound shy of a double-double.

First year Mak McSweeney also turned in a solid performance underneath the hoop, scooping up a season-high nine boards and recording seven points.

Women's basketball returns to the court at 1 p.m. on Saturday as it travels to North Carlonia Wesleyan College for a bout with the Bishops.
