OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team trailed throughout against a tough, experienced Stevenson University squad, falling to the Mustangs 79-57 in non-conference action Sunday.

Stevenson led 12-8 after the first quarter before pulling away with 20 points in the second quarter to go up 32-19 at halftime.

Virginia Wesleyan tried to rally to start the third, getting an opening possession layup from Mak McSweeney before Jayla Harris knocked down a jumper to cut the lead to nine, 32-23.

Stevenson slowed the rally with a Hannah Crist jumper, but Harris quickly answered with a basket to pull the lead within single digits again. Stevenson scored again, but Reagan Holmes connected from three-point range to cut the lead to 36-28 with 6:19 to play in the period. Following a Mustang turnover, Harris scored again to cut the deficit to six. That is the closest the Marlins would get as Stevenson closed out the quarter on a 20-8 run.

Brandi Hall and Jonyae Curry led Stevenson (3-2) with 15 points each as Crist finished with 14. Olivia Coleman posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Harris led the Marlins with 16 points while McSweeney contributed 10 points and six rebounds. Holmes posted 11 points and four assists to help the Marlin effort.

Virginia Wesleyan (2-3/0-0) travels to Lynchburg College (3-1/0-0) on Thursday for a 7 p.m. start in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams.
