Busy Day of Competition Concludes New Captains Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Day two of the New Captains Classic & Combined featured all of the sprint events with many more athletes set to compete.

Shakira Mills ran the double for the women's track and field team, posting a 100m time of 12.76 before breaking the tape in 27.15 in her 200m heat.

Tiana Hughes had an impressive performance in the 400m, running a personal best of 59.53 to finish eighth out of 30 runners.

Marissa Coombs continued the trend of good times with a personal best in the 800m that bested her previous time by more than two seconds, breaking the tape in 2:14.10 to win the event.

Kwonsha Washington also posted a new best, finishing her 400m hurdles race in 1:10.03.

Virginia Wesleyan's 4x100m relay team of Alyssa Willis, Alizae Dollins, Mills, and Hughes finished second out of nine teams with a mark of 50.33. The 4x400m relay team won its event in a time of 4:00.93. That team was made up of Hughes, Willis, Dollins, and Coombs.

The men's track and field team received a pair of career-best performances in the 100m as Siaka Bafalie broke the tape in 11.68 while Armon Ardila followed with a 11.91 time.

The 200m also featured a lot of new bests as Trey White (22.71), Chrishaud Hawkins (22.79), and A.J. Ramirez (23.07) topped their previous marks.

The men's relay teams proved to be just as impressive as the women's squads, finishing in second in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

Bafalie, Ramirez, White, and Hawkins teamed up for a 43.74 mark in the 4x100m. Hawkins, Ramirez, White, and Marquis Sivels finished the 4x400m in a time of 3:22.63.

Virginia Wesleyan will compete at the ODAC Championships on April 22-23.
