About Strikeout Cancer:
The "Strikeout Cancer" movement was created by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) with the intent to raise money and awareness for cancer research. The Marlins joined up in 2009 where they raised just over $3,000. Ten years later, the team raised over $28,000 to bring its grand total over that span to $131,032.
"It's incredible to see how far this thing has grown," said Coach Elliott, who adopted this game after his mother passed of cancer in 2008. "To be a smaller Division III school and still find that kind support is truly something special."
And special it is, as Virginia Wesleyan University has raised more money during this event than any other Division III school in the past four years.
This year, the squad has set its goals even higher as it is aiming to surpass its previous mark of $28,615 in 2018. There will be a silent auction with a plethora of items to bid on as well as free food stands accepting donations. All proceeds received will make their way to the American Cancer Society.
