HISTORY MADE! No. 1 Marlins Win First-Ever NCAA Regional

ASHLAND, Va. – The No. 1-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College softball team advanced to its first-ever NCAA Super Regional with a 9-0 victory over Randolph-Macon College in the regional championship of the Ashland Regional on Monday.

The Marlins will host the Norfolk, Virginia Super Regional on Friday and Saturday against the winner of No. 13 Kean University and No. 11 Christopher Newport University.

Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead after posting four runs in the top of the second inning.

A single and an error put runners on first and third with no outs for the Marlins. Madison Glaubke singled up the middle to score Beth Ford for the first run of the game.

Randolph-Macon was almost out of the frame, getting two quick outs, but a foul ball that would have ended the inning was dropped, giving Kiersten Richardson another shot at the plate. Richardson capitalized, singling to load the bases. Liz Bailey cleared the bases, double to right field for the 4-0 edge.

The Marlins grew the lead to six runs in the third on solo home runs off the bats of Blake Henderson and Teresa Cardamone. Another solo shot made it 7-0 in the fourth as Richardson cleared the wall in left-center field.

The powerful onslaught continued in the fifth as Glaubke connected on her a two-run shot, her second home run of the season, to provide the final margin.

Candace Whittemore (23-6) gave up six runs, three earned, in three innings of work for Randolph-Macon (35-11). The Yellow Jacket pitching staff combined to surrender four homers in just five innings of work.

Glaubke and Bailey each had two hits and three RBI for the Marlins. Richardson, Cardamone, and Glaubke scored two runs each.

Hanna Hull (27-2) threw the first four innings, striking out seven while allowing just two hits and one walk. Kasey Newcomb pitched a scoreless fifth inning to insure the run-rule victory.

No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan (46-2) now awaits its opponent in this weekend's NCAA Division III Super Regional.
