Hull Cruises in 3-0 Marlin Win

ASHLAND, Va. -- Freshman Hanna Hull cruised through seven innings Saturday to make No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan the only unbeaten team remaining in the Ashland Regional of the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament.

Hull (26-2) allowed just two hits and a walk, while striking out 14 in the 3-0 victory over Averett University.

Kiersten Richardson started the game with a single, stealing second before racing home on a double down the line by Liz Bailey.

The Marlins added to the narrow 1-0 lead with a pair in the sixth. Cassetty Howerin singled and stole second, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. Hull singled to left-center to plate Howerin. LeAnn Adkins pinch-ran for Hull, scoring on a double off the bat of Teresa Cardamone.

Kaitlyn Aherron (16-9) went the distance for Averett (29-19), striking out eight and walking five.

Virginia Wesleyan (45-2) will play Monday at 11 a.m. for a berth in its first-ever Super Regional. Averett will face the winner of Randolph-Macon/Franklin & Marshall Sunday evening. The winner would need to defeat the Marlins twice on Monday to claim the regional crown.
