No. 1 Marlins Start Regional with 5-0 Victory
ASHLAND, Va. -- The No. 1-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College softball team got its Ashland Regional off to a good start with a 5-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday.
The Marlins did all their damage in the third inning, scoring all five runs to ensure the victory.
Kiersten Richardson started the inning with a single down the left-field line, stealing second in the subsequent at bat. Liz Bailey walked to put two on for Cassetty Howerin. The Marlin first baseman doubled to right field, plating Richardson and Bailey to put the first two runs on the board.
Blake Henderson connected on a sharp infield single, scoring Howerin for a 3-0 lead. Madison Glaubke scored Henderson with a one-out single up the middle for the 4-0 margin. Kaylah Duplain provided the final score on a sacrifice fly that chased Hanna Hull across the plate.
Hanna Hull (25-2) earned the win for the Marlins after scattering three hits across seven innings. She walked one and struck out nine.
Izzy Schaefer (11-13) was saddled with the loss for Franklin & Marshall (17-22).
No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan (44-2) faces Averett University (29-18) on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Cougars defeated Randolph-Macon College 8-0 in six innings in the first game Saturday.
