Marlins Win Tourney Opener, 4-1, over WildCats

SALEM, Va. -- No. 1 nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan College won its ODAC Softball Tournament opener, 4-1, over No. 8 seeded Randolph College on Friday. The Marlins scored a run in each of the first four innings to pull away.

Virginia Wesleyan loaded the bases in the first inning without the benefit of a hit as Kiersten Richardson and Liz Bailey walked before Cassetty Howerin was hit by a pitch. Blake Henderson sent a ball out to left field, scoring Richardson on the sacrifice fly.

The WildCats quickly tied the contest as Lauren Morris homered to lead off the second inning, but Randolph would tally just one more hit the rest of the way.

The Marlins added a second run in the bottom half of the frame when Kaylah Duplain, who doubled to start the frame, scored on a Richardson sacrifice fly.

Hanna Hull singled home Henderson for a 3-1 lead in the third. Bailey scored Beth Ford with a sacrifice fly in the fourth for the final tally.

Lindsey Chaney (9-9) took the loss for Randolph (24-17), allowing four earned runs on five hits while striking out four and walking five.

Hull (22-1) added to her ODAC lead in wins, striking out 14 over seven innings of one-run ball while surrendering just two hits and one walk.

Virginia Wesleyan (40-1) will face No. 4 seeded Emory & Henry College (30-11) in the winner's bracket tonight at 7 p.m.
