No. 1 Marlins look to finish ODAC play undefeated vs. Bridgewater
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The top-ranked team in the nation will attempt to finish the regular season on a 23-game winning streak, including a perfect 20-0 in conference play as Bridgewater College travels to face Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
The Marlins (37-1/18-0) will honor seniors Kasey Newcomb, Liz Bailey, and Blake Henderson prior to Saturday's game with Bridgewater (10-24/3-13) as part of a Senior Day doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
Liz Bailey has been solid for the Marlins all year long as she is hitting .327 with 22 RBI while walking 32 times. Her walk total leads all of Division III while she is fifth in walks per game with 0.84 walks per contest.
Blake Henderson is hitting .326 on her senior campaign adding in five home runs and 30 RBI, while only striking out five times in 95 at bats.
Kasey Newcomb (1-0) has been very efficient for the Marlins out of the bullpen allowing only two earned runs in 14.0 innings. She is also 2-for-5 at the plate with a triple and one RBI.
The Eagles have lost 11 of their last 14 games coming into Saturday, but won their last two games against Southern Virginia. Mikalia Guard leads the Eagles at the plate, hitting .417 with five home runs and 24 RBI. Freshman Brooke Louden (4-11) has seen the bulk of the innings for her squad this year with a 4.37 ERA.
The Marlins have been led all year by their pitching as the staff has compiled a total of 17 shutouts. The offense as also has done their part by hitting .349 as a squad with 31 home runs. Cassetty Howerin will look to capture the Triple Crown as she currently leads the ODAC in batting average (.482), RBI (43), and is tied for the league lead in home runs (9). Kiersten Richardson will finish atop the league in stolen bases, as she is 20 ahead of second place. Hanna Hull (20-1) leads the ODAC in all major pitching categories with a 0.46 ERA, 20 wins, and 216 strikeouts.
Hull will look to break Kristina Karagiorgis' record for ERA in a season, which is currently at 0.65. Hull needs three more strikeouts to break Brittaney Brown's season record of strikeouts in a season with 218.
