Three Named ODAC Player of the Week
FOREST, Va. -- Freshman pitcher Hanna Hull, sophomore tennis player Paul Gladstone, and track and field athlete Marissa Coombs were recognized as ODAC Players of the Week for their performances this past week.
Hull, a native of Chesterfield, Va., added three more ODAC wins to her impressive first-year stat line as she is now leading NCAA Division III with a 20-1 record thru 24 total appearances. Hull earned two more shutouts amongst her three victories, giving her an ODAC-best eight on the season.
Her first one came via a five-inning shortened 10-0 complete game win at Eastern Mennonite. She gave up just two hits and fanned 10 without a walk. The 10 strikeouts mark her 12th double figure strikeout game of the season. Hull returned to the circle for the final four outs against the Royals, earning the win in the process of an 8-4 Marlins triumph.
She then went the distance in a 5-0 shutout at Lynchburg. She surrendered just three hits and walked a pair. She struck out seven in a full seven frames, bringing her to an ODAC and NCAA Division III leading 216 punchouts.
Gladstone, a Port Orange, Fla. native, picks up his first weekly honor after going 4-0 at #1 singles and #2 doubles in a pair of ODAC matches last week.
In doubles play, Gladstone and partner Joe Holloway earned at 8-4 win over Randolph-Macon and a 9-7 nail-biting triumph over Emory & Henry. Gladstone collected the remaining VWC point in its 7-2 team loss to R-MC, defeating the Yellow Jackets' #1 player 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7).
He then added a straight sets 6-2, 6-0 win over his counterpart from E&H, helping VWC to a 9-0 team victory.
Coombs, a native of Newton, N.J., strengthened her hold on the ODAC's top time in the 1,500-meter run at the New Captains Classic and Combined Events at Christopher Newport University. Coombs finished fourth overall in the event with a time of 4:33.15 to top the ODAC ranks by nearly four seconds. That time is also fifth in NCAA Division III.
