Record-setting Wilson helps VWC to wins over Lynchburg, H-SC

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Victories over Lynchburg College on Sunday and Hampden-Sydney College on Tuesday have helped to establish Graham Wilson as the winningest rookie in the 44-year history of Virginia Wesleyan College's men's tennis program.

Wilson (Newport News/Menchville)bounced Lynchburg's Matt Karvelas 6-0, 6-2 and Hampden-Sydney's Zach King (Henrico/Mills Godwin) 6-4, 6-5 (retired) to improve his current singles record to 23-6.  Not only is it a VWC rookie record, but it is ties the third highest victory total by a Marlin player recorded by Eric Caudill in 2006. In addition, Wilson is now 17-4 at the No.1 flight, which is also a rookie record for wins and ties the VWC record set by Scott Barlow at that flight in 1981.

Wilson's historic wins were just part of two solid efforts by VWC's men as the Marlins rolled past Lynchburg 8-1 and knocked off Hampden-Sydney 7-2.  VWC is now 10-11 overall and 6-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

The Marlins took the lead in both matches by winning doubles play 2-1.  Wilson and rookie teammate Drew Tomajczyk (Chesterfield/Home schooled)won 8-1 against Lynchburg and outlasted H-SC's Houghton Flanagan (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) and King 8-6 at the No. 1 spot.  The Marlin duo has won six consecutive matches to improve to 16-5 overall.  The victory total ties the fourth highest overall and is the second highest at the No. 1 flight.

Tomajczyk also won both of his singles matches against the Hornets and Tigers at the No. 2 flight, as did rookie Tyler Chang (Hvre de Grace, Md./Tome School) at the No. 4 flight. Chang improved to 7-4 at the No. 4 flight and is 10-10 overall.  Sophomore Griffin Graves (Middleburg/Middleburg Academy) also won twice in singles play, competing at the No. 6 flight against Lynchburg and moving up to No. 3 against H-SC.  He improved his season record to 4-2.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, April 20, in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC championship tournament.  Opponent and time are to be announced.
