LEXINGTON, Va. - The eighth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer was bested, 2-0, by top seed Washington and Lee Sunday afternoon in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship quarterfinals. With the result the Marlins finish the year with a record of 5-12-1.
The game was a tight-knit battle for nearly all 90 minutes. Each side found themselves with offensive pressure throughout the first half, but neither team was able to put a goal on the scoreboard. The second half was much of the same, with the Generals holding a slight lead in shots over the Marlins. Washington and Lee finally broke through in the 79th minute, as they earned a penalty kick. Griffin Potter chose the right side to dive towards but the kick was placed too well and just bypassed his outstretched arms. The top seed would then seal up the win two minutes later as they converted on a free kick from right outside the box.
The Marlins had a shot to cut into the lead nearing the end of regulation as Ricky Perrault took a shot, but the attempt was turned aside.
Potter finished the day with seven saves in goal for Virginia Wesleyan.
