VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team punched its ticket to the postseason as it defeated Randolph-Macon, 3-2, Wednesday evening at the Trinder Center. With the win the Marlins go to 4-11-1 on the year but more importantly finish the year at 4-5-1 in ODAC play.
With their ODAC record, the Marlins have earned the eight seed for the Conference Championship and will host ninth-seeded Randolph-Macon at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Trinder Center.
With the season on the line, the Marlins knew they had to come out firing. They did just that as Ricky Perrault headed a ball in the net in just the 12th minute. The senior found the ball on a near perfect Tyler Pratt corner and cleanly finished it to give the Marlins an early lead.
Just under five minutes later, Perrault helped double the Virginia Wesleyan lead. Austin McKenzie split the defense with a pretty though-ball that caught Perrault in stride. The senior was in alone on the keeper and calmly slid a low ball by him to increase the lead.
The Marlins were not done there though, tacking on one more before the halftime whistle. Recently coming on as substitutions, Harrison Weinfeld found Shaun Brooks near the goaline and the Old Dominion University transfer made a nice move to give himself a shooting angle before curling one home. The Yellow Jackets would make an honest effort at a comeback in the second half, notching a pair of quick goals, but the Marlins regained their balance and were able to fend any third goal attempt away.
Griffin Potter picked up the win in goal, stopping four shots in his third win of the year.
