Men's Soccer Falls Short in Season Opener

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team fell to Pfeiffer University, 3-1, in the first game of the Christopher Newport Tournament Friday evening. With the loss, the Marlins fall to 0-1 on the year while Pfeiffer goes to 1-0.

The Falcons pulled ahead first in the game, netting the sole goal of the first half. The Marlins knotted it back up at 1-1 though courtesy of Ricky Perrault. Just over 12 minutes into the second half the senior made a slick run through the midfield, touched a ball pass a defender and rocketed a shot that beat the keeper from approximately 25 yards out. The tie wouldn't stand though as Pfeiffer would go on to score two more before the final whistle.

The Marlins outshot their opponent in the first half 5-2 but the Falcons came back with a strong second half effort. Freshman keeper Griffin Potter was saddled with the loss in goal despite a six save effort.

Men's soccer returns to the pitch on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they host Greensboro college at the Trinder Center for game two of the Christopher Newport Tournament.
