Marlins Fall 2-1 to Generals Despite Late Surge
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- A cloudy and wet Virginia Beach night was met with fire and fury from the Washington and Lee University (9-3-1, 4-2) and the Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer teams (7-7, 2-4) as the Generals managed to edge the Marlins 2-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. Seniors Alex Suprise and Ben Yount were recognized in a pregame ceremony as part of Senior Night festivities.
The matchup began with scrappy defensive play from both sides as the first half of play ended scoreless.
The Generals were the first to get on the board in the 55th minute of play as Dylan Ritch scored an unassisted goal.
Just seven minutes later, in the 62nd minute, Harry Pinkerton gave the Generals another unassisted goal on the night to double their lead.
Harrison Weinfeld's goal in the 86th minute was able to inch the Marlins closer to leveling the score. For the final four minutes of the game, it seemed like play had shifted into the hands of the Marlin offense. But even with a momentum shift, the Marlins were unable to find the back of the net a second time which meant that the Generals would return to Lexington victorious.
The Generals put up 19 shots while the Marlins had nine of their own. W&L also had an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Gillen Beck made three saves for Washington and Lee (9-3-1/4-2) while Jamison Auer registered four stops for the Marlins.
Virginia Wesleyan looks to bounce back against Hampden-Sydney (8-5-1/3-3) on Wednesday in another home ODAC match.
