First Half Goal Carries Bridgewater over Marlins
BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's soccer team scored its lone goal in the 23rd minute, but it was enough as the Eagles defeated Virginia Wesleyan 1-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Wednesday afternoon.
The defenses carried the match early as the first did not occur until the 22nd minute when Bridgewater's Eric Hogge had his shot blocked. Following a foul, Hogge had another opportunity. Leo Alcantara passed a ball across the box where Hogge took a shot towards the far post for the 1-0 lead.
The Marlins had several chances late in the half, taking four shots, two of which were saved by Quentin Boric.
Virginia Wesleyan had another good chance with the ball in the offensive zone for the start of the second half. The Marlins ripped four shots in a nine-minute span, but could not find the back of the net. Codi Dalton, Will Augsberger, and Ricky Perrault all got off good looks, but Boric stood strong between the pipes.
Boric finished with five saves for Bridgewater (5-6/2-1) while Nick Peterson made three stops for Virginia Wesleyan.
The Marlins held an 11-8 edge in shots and 3-1 mark in corner kicks.
Virginia Wesleyan (6-5/1-2) hosts Randolph College (6-4/1-1) for an ODAC contest Saturday at 3:30 p.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend.
