Marlins Stay Hot in 2-1 Win over Albright
READING, Pa. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team won its third-straight match on Sunday, defeating Albright College 2-1 in non-conference action.
Albright broke through for the first goal of the match just five minutes in. Anthony Parlato beat his defender one-on-one for a shot 10 yards out. Marlin keeper Nick Peterson and the defense locked down from there, not allowing another goal.
The Marlins trailed 1-0 at the half, but came out strong after intermission to put pressure on the Albright defense. VWU put six shots on goal in the first 15 minutes after intermission, but all were stopped by Billy Mullen to preserve the 1-0 lead.
All of those shots eventually softened up the Albright defense as the Marlins broke through for a score in the 68th minute. Devin Wallace fed the ball up to Kevin Prophet who managed to draw out the goalie for his first career goal.
Nick Peterson made his third-straight start between the pipes for the Marlins, allowing just the first goal in that time. He made a pair of saves in the victory. He now has 11 saves on the season for a .917 save percentage.
The Marlins held a 19-9 edge in shots and 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. Mullen made an impressive 11 saves for Albright (1-5-1).
Virginia Wesleyan (5-1) travels to Christopher Newport University (3-2) on Wednesday for a regional rivalry contest at 7 p.m.
