VIRGINIA BEACH --Randolph College's WildCats found the openings they needed for two quick back-to-back shots early in the second half of Saturday's men's soccer game at Virginia Wesleyan College.
But, instead of seeing a goal, they saw VWC goalie Connor Kirkham (Centreville/Chantilly Westfield). The Marlins' junior goal produced two stellar saves that kept the 'Cats out of the net and helped carry VWC to a 2-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
The WildCats (6-5-3, 3-3-2 ODAC) did get a goal when Travis Brown (Portsmouth/Wilson) headed the ball in off an assist from Troy Jurney (Camp Lejeune, N.C./White Oak) in the 71st minute, but it was too little too late for the team from Lynchburg.
Virginia Wesleyan (8-4-2, 5-2-1 ODAC) built a 2-0 lead and rode it to the win, beginning with senior Isaac Arrington (DeSoto, Texas/Midlothian, Texas), who found some space between himself and the goal and ripped the ball into the back of the net.
Junior Josh Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Addison Trinity Christian) assisted on the scoring play that gave VWC the lead with just 15:42 played. The Marlins moved out to a 2-0 advantage in the 66th minute when junior Travis Walke (Virginia Beach/Landstown) beat the left side of the defense to score off another assist from Kemp.
Virginia Wesleyan played a more aggressive offense in the second half and kept the pressure on the WildCats with an array of shots, including a couple that just missed the mark. VWC outshot Randolph 15-5 in the half and posted an overall 21-8 advantage in shots and a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Kirkham finished with three saves and Randolph goalie CJ Stevens (Mechanicsville/Lee-Davis) recorded five. The 'Cats also recorded two team saves.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Wednesday, Oct. 22, hosting Bridgewater College in the final home game of the regular season. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
