First half goals help VWC to victory at Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Robert Holschuh closed his interscholastic soccer career with 40 goals scored as an eventual all-state player for Pius XI in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

On Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Methodist University, the Virginia Wesleyan College rookie scored the first goal in his intercollegiate career, helping his Marlins team to a 2-0 non-conference win over the host Monarchs.

His goal was the second of the day for Virginia Wesleyan, which won for the third consecutive win for the Marlins, who improved to 5-2.  Holschuh nearly made it a double goal day late in the second half, but he connected for a header that bounced off the post.

Virginia Wesleyan produced 10 shots overall in the game, scoring twice off four attempts in the first half. Senior Brian Cornell (Front Royal/Warren County)  scored his fourth goal of the season, putting the Marlins on the scoreboard off a header in the 13th minute. His shot was assisted by sophomore Josh Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Addison Trinity Christian Academy).

The Marlins rode the lead late in the half when senior Chris Luce (Chesapeake/Oscar F. Smith) produced a solid shot that was saved by Nick Martens (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth). But, Holschuh followed the shot and ripped the loose ball back into the net to give VWC a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute.

Defense dominated second half play, but VWC out-shot Methodist 6-4 in the half.  The Monarchs finished with an overall shot advantage however, 11-10. The host team also posted a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore Connor Kirkham (Centreville/Chantilly Westfield)produced four saves for the Marlins, who also recorded a pair of team saves.  Martens finished with three saves for Methodist.

Virginia Wesleyan will attempt to extend its three-game winning streak on Saturday, Sept. 21, when the Marlins host Emory & Henry College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition beginning at 3 p.m.
