SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten as it took down Piedmont University, 16-12, Saturday afternoon in Savannah, Ga. With the result, the Marlins jump to 3-0 on the year while Piedmont goes to 2-2.
The first quarter was a bit of a chess match with neither team able to take much of an advantage. At the stanza's end, the Marlins found themselves down 3-2. The first five minutes of the next quarter mirrored the previous one, with the Lions outscoring VWU 3-2. Before the whistle sounded for half though, the Marlins offense kicked in as they piled in the contest's next four goals.
The third quarter belonged to Jason Thibeault. The freshman notched four goals including three-straight to end out the period. He also notched the assist on the Marlins' only other goal of the half. His offensive prowess gave the Marlins a 13-9 advantage with just the fourth to go. And in that fourth quarter, Virginia Wesleyan took care of business.
Thibeault finished the day with five goals and a pair of assists. Greg Gaetano helped aid that effort as he had his own hat trick, while assisting on four goals. Also scoring on the day was Nathan Sheirburn (2), Cole Maguire (1), Thomas Potter (1), Austin Sax (1), Joey Rayman (1), Trevor Lalonde (1) and Zach Hope (1).
The Marlins dominated the face0ff 'X' winning 23 of the 32 restarts taken. Sheirburn played a large role in that, winning 21 of his 27 attempts and picking up 14 groundballs to go along with it.
In net, Kyle Leeming picked up the win, turning aside a season-high 20 shots.
Men's lacrosse will quickly be back in action as the team square off against Berry College at 1 p.m. That game will be played at Daffin Park in Savannah, Ga.
