FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team used a comeback effort to take down Methodist, 9-8, Saturday afternoon on the road. WIth the win, the Marlins improve to 2-0 on the year while Methodist drops to 1-2.

The Marlins found themselves in a hole early as the Monarchs registered the contest's first three goals. Greg Gaetano changed that as he finished a Jon Onia pass it the 5:40 mark. That would followed by a Nathan Sheirburn goal on the man-up opportunity and Austin Sax would even things back up with a goal before the end of the quarter. In the second, the Monarchs had what seemed would be the only goal but Onia cashed one in right before the halftime whistle, knotting things up at 4-4.

Coming out of the half, the Monarchs got off to another hot start, netting three straight to take a quick 7-4 lead. Gaetano would get his second of the day midway through, but Methodist answered to keep the three-goal advantage. Down a man at the end of the period, the Marlins were able to score shorthanded courtesy of Cole Maguire.

Down just two going into the final stanza, the Marlins began to get hot on both sides of the field. Sheirburn narrowed the Monarch lead to just one at the seven minute mark and a Gaetano lazer tied the game up at 8-8. Just one minute after his game-tying goal, Gaetano netted another rip, giving the Marlins a 9-8 lead with four minutes to go. The Monarchs would toss all they had at them over the last couple of minutes, including a man-up situation, but the Marlins held steady to preserve the victory.

Gaetano would finish the evening with a team-high four goals, while Sheirburn pitched in two. Maguire, Onia and Sax would add the other three.

At the faceoff 'X', Sheirburn had a tremendous day, coming out victorious seven of his eight times.

Kyle Leeming picked up another win between the pipes, turning aside nine Methodist shots.

Men's lacrosse will return to action at 11 a.m. on Saturday as the team travels to Savannah, Ga. to take on Piedmont Univeristy.
