Strong start not enough for Marlins in loss at Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior Nick Pappas scored at the 2:30 mark of the first quarter off an assist from sophomore Josh Currier to pull Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins within a 5-4 score of Washington and Lee University's Generals on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition.

But, the solid start by the Marlins did not extend into the second quarter, or the remainder of the game, as Washington and Lee outscored VWC 20-4 to post a 25-8 victory.

The Generals (9-5, 6-1 ODAC) did most of their damage in the second quarter, pulling away with eight unanswered goals.  Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) put Virginia Wesleyan (9-4, 4-3 ODAC) back on the scoreboard with 2:39 remaining in the quarter to make it a 13-5 score.  Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross-Hill Academy) scored at the 14:00 mark of the third quarter for VWC, but the Marlins could not generate enough offense to keep up with the host team.

Pappas scored three goals for VWC, Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and Currier added two each, and Tim Gunn (Sparks, Md./Hereford) scored one. Currier also produced three assists and Cory Hilliard (Butler, Pa./Butler) had one.

Washington and Lee was led by Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy) with four goals and five assists.

Rory Finnegan (Lowell, Mass./Lowell)recorded 10 saves for the Marlins in 46+ minutes and Sean Galloway (Shady Side, Md./Southern) finished with two.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Wednesday, April 23, playing at Randolph-Macon College at 7 p.m.
