VIRGINIA BEACH – Leadership, work ethic, and heart are just a few characteristics Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse head coach J.P. Stewart hopes are exhibited by team captains who lead his national caliber program.
The Marlins enjoyed a historic year in 2012 finishing 10-7 against one of the toughest schedules in the country, while competing in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), considered the toughest men's lacrosse league in the country.
Hopes to continue that success in 2013 will be spearheaded by three seniors who have been selected as the Marlins' captains. All three have shown a commitment to success: Mikey Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horsehead), Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic), and Brandon Kirklin (Denver, Colo./Littleton).
Stewart holds these student-athletes in high regards.
"Our players selected Mikey, Corey, and Brandon as team captains in large part due to their dedication and commitment to Marlin lacrosse," said Stewart, who begins his 11th season with the Marlins. "All three have shown great leadership and our coaches are really excited to have them represent our program as team captains."
Bauer, a goalie, was the team's defensive MVP last year after compiling 207 saves. Last year against conference rival and national powerhouse Lynchburg College, Corey recorded 20 saves in andODAC tournament meeting. Bauer, who boasted 12 games with double figure saves during the season, recorded an 8.75 goals against average.
Connors was one of the Marlins' leading scorers, finishing the 2012 season with 12 goals and 11 assists. He also led the Marlins with 71 ground balls and recorded 100 wins in 180 face-off attempts. Connors enters his senior season with 269 face-off victories, the third highest total in program history.
Kirklin, one of the team's defensive leaders, will continue that role for the Marlins. He will attempt to help guide the team to a fourth consecutive winning season.
The Marlins will once again face one of the toughest schedules in the country, highlighted by conference play and a Top 25 clash versus NewYork's Ithaca College on Tuesday, March 12, on Foster Field at the Trinder Center. VWC's non-conference slate includes contests against Christopher Newport University, Georgia's Berry College and Tennessee's University of the South (Sewanne).
The Marlins open their 2013 campaign hosting Ferrum College on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m.
