VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University was on the opposite side of another thriller Saturday afternoon as the team dropped its contest with St. John Fisher College, 64-61, in the Championship game of the TowneBank Tip-Off Tournament. With the result, the Marlins move to 1-1 on the season while the Cardinals go to 2-0.
It was another battle for the Marlins as the teams seemed to continuously exchange leads for the duration of the game. Down two points with just over a minute to go, Tim Fisher drove to the basket, earning him a trip to the charity stripe. There, the sophomore knocked down both shots to knot the game at 61-61. On the ensuing possession, VWU forced a turnover but gave the ball right back leading to a lay in by the Cardinals. Without a timeout, the Marlins pushed the ball down the court with just 15 seconds left to play. The squad got the ball down to Fisher on the block where he made a lay up but was called for the charge beforehand, handing Fisher the ball with just 1.7 left in regulation. The Cardinals would seal then seal it up at the line.
Despite the final play, Fisher turned in a solid game as he racked up 16 points and seven boards. Keijon Honore also played well as he chipped in nine points and four dimes. Those two would be named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the Tournament.
Men's basketball will return to action at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday as the team hosts Salisbury for a non-conference bout.
