Men's Basketball Stung By Wasps In First ODAC Loss

EMORY, Va. -  The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team suffered its first conference loss of the season as it fell, 89-83, to Emory and Henry on the road Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Marlins move to 9-4 on the year and 3-1 in the ODAC. Emory & Henry improves to 12-1 overall (4-0 ODAC).

It was known this was going to be a battle as this was the current #1-#2 matchup in the ODAC. The teams were pretty much even through the first 20 minutes with Emory & Henry's nine-point lead at the 14:40 mark being the largest deficit. At that mark though, the Marlins stormed back going on a 13-2 run to give them a 24-20 lead midway through the stanza. The two sides would trade the lead for the remainder of the half, with the Wasps' late lay up making the difference, 44-41 at half.

In the second, E&H pulled away a bit, teetering on a double-digit deficit. The Marlins attempted to come back, coming within one possession twice, but the Wasps staved off any threat.

Lamont Steward turned in his fourth double-double of the season, leading the team in both points (19) and rebounds (12).

Three others reached double-digit scoring during the contest including a career-high 16 from Corey Pelham and 11 from both Keijon Honore and Tyree Golston.

Men's basketball will return to its home court next as it squares off with Shenandoah at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
