Field Hockey Shuts Out Ferrum on Home Turf

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team shut out Ferrum, 5-0, Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field. With the win, the Marlins improve to 6-4 on the season and go to 3-1 in conference action. Ferrum slides to 3-9 on the year (0-4 ODAC).

The Marlins got on the board first as Julie Fassl put one in just three minutes into the game. Off a Hunter Majewski penalty corner, the ball went right to Cori Jackson who swung it over to Fassl. Th sophomore lined her shot up and cracked one to the back of the cage. Fassl would double the lead and her own goal total six minutes later as she finished a pass from Janine De Perio. VWU would tally one more before the whistle intermission courtesy of De Perio. Elizabeth Roberto got the play started, stealing a pass and earning a breakaway towards the goal. She pulled the netminder out before sliding a pass to De Perio for a wide open finish.

Coming out of the half up 3-0, the Marlins had no intentions of letting up. Five minutes into the second stanza, Emily Price ripped a hard shot that beat the goalie and increased her season goal total to seven. Rberto would put the icing on the cake 15 minutes later, scoring a tough angle shot for her seventh of the season as well.

Skye Swain played all 70 minutes between the pipes and fended off the one shot she faced. The senior now has five shut outs on the year, leading all ODAC goalies.

Field hockey returns to action at 5 p.m. on Wednesday as the squad heads to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on Bridgewater.
