Second Half Goal Sinks Marlins
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Bridgewater College scored the lone goal in the second half on Wednesday to defeat the Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team 2-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
Bridgewater got on the board first, scoring at the 9:30 mark when Emily Matisons sent a pass right in front of the cage to Jacqueline DiFulvio who managed to finish the play for her second goal of the season.
The Marlins responded nine minutes later on a well-played penalty corner. Hunter Majewski took the corner, sending it up to Karleigh Warren at the top of the circle. Warren quickly touched it to Elizabeth Roberto who lofted it over the keeper for her tenth goal on the year.
The Virginia Wesleyan defense kept the Eagles at one goal the remainder of the half as Swain made four saves. Ali Bishop was just as impressive for Bridgewater, making three stops to keep VWU from scoring again.
The tie lasted until the final 10 minutes, when Bridgewater scored the game-winner. Tessa Tierson ripped a shot that banged off the pads of Skye Swain out to Courtney Cooke, who capitalized for the 2-1 victory.
Bishop made eight saves for the Eagles while Isabel Lopez contributed a defensive save. Swain made six saves for the Marlins.
Virginia Wesleyan held a 13-9 edge in shots while Bridgewater (6-10/3-3) possessed a 6-4 margin in penalty corners.
Virginia Wesleyan (7-9/1-5) hosts Washington and Lee University (11-4/6-0) for the regular season finale on Saturday at 2 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Marlins as VWU recognizes lone senior Morgan Lee.
