Marlins Break Scoring Record in Victory over Sweet Briar

AMHERST, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team set the school record for goals in a game on Saturday with a 13-0 non-conference victory over Sweet Briar College.

The record was 12 goals, which was accomplished three different times, most recently last October in a home victory over Sweet Briar.

The Marlins started the scoring early when Hayden Thornbrugh finished a rebound off the pads of the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead at 1:59. Taylor Abraszek fed Lindsy Smarrelli for the second goal of the game at the 3:59 mark.

Abraszek scored a goal of her own at 13:39 when she finished off a feed from Hunter Majewski.

Elizabeth Roberto rounded out the scoring in the first half with a hat trick, scoring all three goals in just over four minutes prior to intermission.

The second half belonged to Thornbrugh as the freshman continued her career day. Scoring the first goal of the game, Thornbrugh added four goals in the second half for a career-high five goals.

Thornbrugh's five goals ties a program record, matching the total of Gayla Dalyrmple-Smith set against Hollins on October 19, 2002.

Joining Thornbrugh in double-figure goals was Roberto who finished with three. Janine De Perio added two goals and an assist. Kennedi Jones was the lone Marlin with multiple assists, registering three on the afternoon.

Rosemary Austin made 34 saves for Sweet Briar (0-11). The Marlins outshot the Vixens 58-0 with a 17-0 edge in penalty corners.

Virginia Wesleyan (7-6/1-2) hosts Randolph-Macon (5-8/1-3) Wednesday for a 5 p.m. ODAC start.
