Marlins Defeat Ferrum 4-3 in Sunday Tilt
FERRUM, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team scored early against Ferrum College, holding on for a 4-3 non-conference victory on Sunday.
Ferrum answered at 10:11 when Kiani Mohica finished off an unassisted tally to even the score. VWU did not waste much time to steal the lead again, scoring two minutes later when Hunter Majewski found Elizabeth Roberto for the goal. Roberto scored again two minutes later off an assist by Julie Fassl as Virginia Wesleyan took a 3-1 lead at the 14:53 mark.
Mohica scored again for Ferrum at the 24:46 mark, the final goal of the first half. The Panthers would get no closer than one goal the rest of the way.
Virginia Wesleyan posted an insurance tally in the 39th minute as Majewski found Abraszek for her second score of the game.
Mohica picked up her fifth point of the match when she found Destanee Cutler for a Ferrum goal at 57:12 to result in the final score.
Mia Holmes made 11 saves for Ferrum (1-9) while Skye Swain stopped four shots for the Marlins.
Virginia Wesleyan led 29-12 in shots and 12-0 in penalty corners.
Virginia Wesleyan (5-5/0-1) hosts Eastern Mennonite University (3-5/0-2) Saturday at 1 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest.
