Marlins Post 7-0 Shutout on Hood
FREDERICK, Md. – The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team scored early and often, posting seven goals in a 7-0 shutout of Hood College on Friday afternoon. It is the most goals scored by the Marlins since a 12-0 victory over Sweet Briar College on October 19 of last season.
The Marlins scored three goals in the first half before posting four more after intermission. VWU outshot Hood 45-0 in the game, with a 27-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Hunter Majewski started the scoring at the 15:50 mark when she corralled her own rebound and finished it past the keeper.
Karleigh Warren found Taylor Wilhelm 10 minutes later with a hard pass to the back post for the 2-0 lead. Lindsy Smarrelli rounded out the scoring in the first half when she dribbled past the keeper with three minutes remaining until halftime.
Wilhelm added to her impressive game in the second half, scoring two of the Marlins' four goals after intermission. It was the first career hat trick for Wilhelm, topping the two goals she scored against Sweet Briar last season.
Hailey Poisal made 24 saves for Hood (0-3) while Skye Swain played all 70 minutes in the cage for VWU.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-2) continues a busy weekend with a non-conference match at Notre Dame (Md.) (1-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
