ODAC Tourney Run Ends with 4-1 Loss
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The No. 1-seeded Shenandoah University baseball team scored four runs in the sixth to defeat No. 4-seeded Virginia Wesleyan to conclude the Marlins run in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament with a 4-1 decision.
Strong pitching efforts from both sides controlled the first five innings of the game. Junior Nick Bay dominated the Shenandoah lineup for the first five innings allowing only five hits, along with Michael Bugonowicz for the Hornets who kept the Marlins at three hits.
The Hornets put together a rally in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs. Back-to-back triples from Abel Arocho and Nick Goode highlighted the four-run inning accompanied by an RBI single from Donnie Forgacs.
Trailing 4-0, the Marlins attempted a ninth-inning rally with a leadoff error and walk, allowing a double from Austin Obenour to plate Deon Hammond, forcing the Hornets to go to the bullpen. Tyler Hott was able to close out the inning for the Hornets inducing a ground ball to shortstop to end the game.
Michael Bugonowicz (5-1) earned the win for Shenandoah, allowing four hits and one run in 8.2 innings. He struck out nine and walked five while throwing 149 pitches. He forced the Marlins to strand the bases loaded twice, in the fourth and sixth innings.
Bay (4-4) took the loss for the Marlins while giving up four runs, four earned, in five innings. He struck out three and walked two while giving up eight hits.
Virginia Wesleyan ends the regular season with a 21-20 record and 11-9 mark in conference play. The Marlins will await the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament selections to see if the season will continue.
