Early Runs Carry Generals past Marlins

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The No. 2-seeded Washington and Lee University baseball team scored two runs in the third, and the first seven runs of the game, to defeat No. 4-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College 7-2 on Saturday night.

The Generals pounced on Marlin starter Chance Pauley early in the third inning with a leadoff single, followed by a double to put runners on second and third. Ryan Monson singled to right-center to score Austin Crane for the first run. Chadwick Feeley reached on a fielder's choice to chase the second run across the plate.

W&L added four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach. A single, error, and walk loaded the bases with no outs. Matt Wasson singled home a run to make it 3-0. Paul Diven drove in another run before Kyle Ruedisili singled home a pair for a 6-0 edge.

Trailing 7-0, the Marlins put together a mini rally in the top of the eighth inning, scoring a pair of runs. Jacob Pilarski doubled to center with one out, before a Justin Erby hit by pitch forced the Generals to go to the bullpen. Corey King doubled to right-center, scoring Pilarski. A wild pitch allowed the second Marlin run to score.

David Van Geluwe (2-1) earned the win for Washington and Lee (27-12), allowing two earned runs in 7.1 innings. He struck out three and walked four.

Pauley (3-3) took the loss for the Marlins while giving up six runs, three earned, in six innings. He struck out three and walked one while giving up 10 hits.

Virginia Wesleyan (21-19) will face the top seed, and No. 3-nationally ranked, Shenandoah University in an elimination game Sunday at 11 a.m.
