Monteverde Dominates No. 21 Randolph-Macon, 7-1

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Freshman Patrick Monteverde built off his ODAC Rookie of the Year honor, dominating No. 21, and third-seeded, Randolph-Macon in the ODAC Tournament opener on Friday. The No. 4 seeded Marlins won 7-1 after dropping two regular season contests to R-MC.

The Marlins scored four runs in the first inning to jump out quickly. Deon Hammond singled home Justin Erby to make it 1-0. Taylor Erby put the ball in play to score Corey King. Brandon Kussmaul followed with a run-scoring triple before racing home on a Randy Neisz single.

Randolph-Macon scored its lone run in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on a Marlin error. Monteverde kept the Yellow Jackets off the board the rest of the way.

Monteverde (7-2) allowed just one unearned run in a complete game effort, throwing 122 pitches. He gave up only five hits while striking out eight.

The Marlins added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the fifth on RBI doubles from Justin Erby and King.

No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan (21-18) plays No. 2 Washington and Lee University (26-12) Saturday at 6 p.m. in the winners' bracket of the ODAC Tournament.
