Marlins Blanked 13-0 by No. 13 Randolph-Macon
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The No. 13 Randolph-Macon College baseball team put up big numbers offensively to defeat Virginia Wesleyan in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Tuesday afternoon.
Randolph-Macon began the scoring early in the second inning. A triple by Cole Migliorini made way for an RBI single from Stuart Brown to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. A homer from Joseph Tuzzolo tacked on another run for a 2-0 margin.
Highlighted by another triple from Migliorini, the Yellow Jackets put three more on the board in the third to take the momentum from the Marlins.
Extending their lead even further in the fourth, Randolph Macon was able to load the bases with three singles. Rick Spiers took advantage of the loaded bases, launching a grand slam over the left-field fence to put the Yellow Jackets up 9-0.
Aided by a pair of double plays, Matthew Nickles (3-2) was able to keep the Marlins out of scoring position for seven innings on the mound. Nickles allowed four hits, recording seven strikeouts while walking just one.
Randolph-Macon added three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to provide the final margin.
Spiers went 1-for-3 with four RBI for Randolph Macon (21-7/10-3). Five different Yellow Jackets scored a pair of runs.
Virginia Wesleyan (16-14/7-6) travels to Lynchburg College (15-16/5-10) Saturday for an ODAC doubleheader with a noon first pitch.
