No.15 Cortland State takes two from Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Cortland State University produced early leads in both games of a doubleheader Sunday with Virginia Wesleyan College and never fell behind en route to an 8-3, 6-5 non-conference sweep at Marlins Field.

The 15th-ranked Red Dragons (2-0) scored four runs in the first inning of the first game and posted two runs in the opening inning of the second game to put the host Marlins (0-3) on the comeback trail in both contests.

Virginia Wesleyan pulled within a 4-2 score in the first game scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Brett Sutryk(Bath, N.Y./Haverling) led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a single by rookie Justin Erby (Norfolk/Lake Taylor) and scored when rookie Ty Boothe(Virginia Beach/Floyd E. Kellam) hit a sacrifice fly into right.

Cortland State took the run back however, setting things up with a two-out single by senior Mike DeCarr (Syracuse/Westhill). He scored on a single by Donny Castaldo (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane).  The Red Dragons pulled away for good in the top of the ninth, scoring three times, aided by a two-run single by Anthony Iacomini (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River).

CSU led 3-0 in the second game and pushed away from the Marlins with a four-run fourth inning. The inning included a lead-off triple by Max Rossing (Rockville Centre/South Side) and a double by Chris Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham).

Virginia Wesleyan cut into the 7-0 deficit with a three-run surge in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Zach Bach(Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) singled and scored when junior Jordan Miller(Chesapeake/Grassfield) doubled. Rookie C.J. Lindsay(Remington/Bealeton Liberty) followed with a single, and both Marlins scored on a double to the left by rookie Austin Gammon(North Chesterfield/Lloyd C. Bird).

After VWC turned a double play to end Cortland's fifth inning, the Marlins continued their comeback in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice to make it a 6-5 game. Rookie Nic Kurz led off with a single and advanced to third on a Boothe double. They both scored when rookie Taylor Erby (Norfolk/Lake Taylor) smashed a single into center field.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Cortland State started its turn at bat in the top of the seventh, but umpires ended the game at that point due to darkness.

Rookie Patrick Barton(Alton/Halifax County) took the pitching loss for VWC, striking out four, walking four, and allowing four earned runs in six innings. Brandon McClain (Coram/Longwood) notched the win, striking out three batters, walking one, and not allowing any runs in three innings.  Mark Palumbo (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) finished for the Red Dragons.

Nine different CSU players recorded a hit in the second, highlighted by Rossing's triple. Kurz and Gammon topped VWC's nine-hit offense with two each.

Virginia Wesleyan finished with seven hits in the first game, led by Sutryk with a pair of doubles. Iacomini connected for three singles in a 14-hit output by CSU.

Junior Dylan Stoskus(Ashburn/Arlington Bishop O'Connell) worked eight inning on the mound for the Marlins and took the loss. He struck out nine batters, walked three, and surrendered five earned runs. Rookie Will Hickey (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial)pitched the final inning for VWC and struck out a pair of batters.  He walked two and gave up four hits.

Cortland State used six pitchers in the contest, starting with Brandon Serio (Bedford Hills/Fox Lane) who recorded the win. He faced 12 batters and struck out five, allowed three hits, and gave up just one earned run.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition Tuesday, Feb. 18, playing its four consecutive game against the top 15-ranked team.  The Marlins motor to Maryland to face the No. 12 SeaGulls of Salisbury University.  Salisbury pulled out a 5-4 win over the Marlins when the teams met last Friday at VWC.  Game time at SU is 2 p.m.
